Fotografiska New York is currently hosting a captivating exhibition titled "Best in Show," which beautifully captures the deep emotional ties between animals and their human families. This unique display, reminiscent of the cherished classic film, delves into the intense devotion people feel for their animal companions, a sentiment many can instantly relate to.
The exhibition, which opened its doors in late September and will run until January 2024, is a vibrant collection of photographs, video installations, and sculptures spanning two floors. It showcases the work of 25 artists from across the globe, including renowned figures like William Wegman and Elliott Erwitt. According to Sophie Wright, Executive Director of Fotografiska New York, the concept for the exhibit emerged during the pandemic, a period when pet ownership significantly increased. The aim is to examine the intricate dynamics of our relationships with pets, reflecting their growing presence in urban lives and the unwavering dedication of their owners. The showcase features over 130 pieces, ranging from spontaneous captures to formal portraits, with visual artist Sophie Gamand's celebrated series "Wet Dog" and "Pit Bull Flower Power" also being prominently featured.
Beyond its artistic merit, "Best in Show" also serves as a platform for animal advocacy, emphasizing the importance of understanding and caring for pets. The museum has collaborated with Emmy Award-winning actress and dedicated animal activist Katherine Heigl and her pet nutrition company. Heigl expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that it combines her passions for art and animals. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will directly benefit her Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, an organization committed to animal welfare. Additionally, a series of events will be held throughout the exhibition's duration, many in conjunction with Badass Animal Rescue, to promote adoption initiatives. Artists like Gamand, through her work with Pit Bulls, also aim to challenge societal perceptions and combat discrimination against certain breeds, fostering a more compassionate view of these often-misunderstood animals.
